Creating a Junk Mail (Spam) Filter Email Rule in Microsoft Outlook Express

Step 1

From Microsoft Outlook Express, select the Tools | Message Rules | Mail... menu.

Step 2

Check the Where the message body contains specific words check box, and then click the highlighted contains specific words text in the Rule Description.

Step 3

Add all the words and phrases that commonly occur in a junk mail message by typing them in the edit box and clicking the Add button.

When you're finished, click OK.

Step 4

Check the Move it to the specified folder check box and then click the highlighted specified text in the Rule Description.

Step 5

Either select an existing folder from the list, or create a new one by clicking the New Folder button.

Step 6

Click OK when you've selected the folder that the junk mail will be moved to.

Step 7

Optionally, give the new mail rule a nice name.
Then click OK.

Step 8

Lastly, click OK again to save the rule.

Remember to check the folder where junk mail is moved from time to time to make sure the rule is not filtering mail that should be getting through, and to empty the folder occasionally.

When a junk mail message gets through the filter, identify a phrase or two in the message that would have identified it, and add it to the list of words the rule looks for.
